NATIONAL:
Bihar imposes complete liquor ban from today:

·        Bihar government today imposed a complete ban on foreign and local liquor across the state, becoming the fourth dry state in India after Gujarat, Nagaland, and Mizoram.
·        CM Nitish Kumar had earlier imposed a partial ban on liquor in the state. Hotels and bars will not serve liquor anymore, but, Army canteens will continue to sell it, said Kumar.
India’s fastest train Gatimaan Express launched:
·        Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu today flagged off India’s fastest train, the “semi-bullet” Gatimaan Express, from the Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station in Delhi.
·        The train will run between Delhi and Agra. Gatimaan will operate six days a week, except on Friday and can attain a maximum speed of 160 km per hour. The train's commercial run will commence from April 6.
Mumbai gets it’s first-ever AC local train:

·        Mumbai has got its first air-conditioned suburban local train, built at a cost of 54 crore.
·        The local train does not have any general or first class compartments. It will undergo software and technical updates in the coming month, and speed trials for another five to six months.
Odisha to Launch Model Schools in 14 Districts:
·        The Odisha government is set to launch its first set of 100 English-medium schools under the guidance of Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya in 14 districts.
·        Chief minister Naveen Patnaik will formally inaugurate the first model school at Hinjli in Ganjam district of the State.
·        It will reserve 50 % seats for scheduled categories and girl students.

Dubai’s United World Infrastructure to launch hotel startup in India:

·        Dubai-based global infrastructure investment and development firm United World Infrastructure (UWI) has partnered with Royal Orchid scion Arjun Baljee to launch a mid-market hotel start-up in the country.
·        The JV (India Hospitality Investment Company) will lease existing mid-market hotels from independent property owners and invest in upgrading them.
Xiaomi to host Mi festival on April 6:
·        On the occasion of its sixth birthday, Xiaomi is hosting a Mi festival on its India website on April 6.
·        It will offer the Mi 5 on flash sale, along with the Redmi Note 3, and 20,000 mAh Mi Power Bank.
·        Accessories including Mi In-Ear Headphones Pro, Mi USB cable and Mi LED Light Enhanced will also be sold.
India planning to launch marriage cruises:

·        The Shipping Ministry is planning to launch marriage cruises with a guest capacity of 4000-5000 persons.
·        The government wants to facilitate these cruises in Goa, Mumbai and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, according to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
·        Plans are also afoot to develop 1300 islands and 218 lighthouses for tourism. Talks are on with the DGCA to operate seaplanes too.
Aadhaar enrolment crosses 1 billion: IT Minister
·        Communications and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasaddeclared that more than one billion Aadhaar numbers have been generated by the Unique Identification Authority of India in the past five and a half years.
·        Notably, the first Aadhaar card was issued in 2010.
Government sanctions 20 crore for Varanasi tourism:

·        The Tourism Ministry has sanctioned 20 crore for promoting tourism in Varanasi.
·        Projects under this grant will include a sound and light show, a Buddha theme park in Sarnath and conservation of the temples of Gurudham and Markandey Mahadev.
·        The infrastructure projects were approved by the ministry's Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC)
Indian Air Force to participate in Red Flag exercise:
·        Indian Air Force (IAF) will participate in Red Flag air exercise along with US, NATO and allied forces that are scheduled to be conducted from 28 April to 13 May 2016 in Alaska.
·        The exercise will see participation of 12 IAF aircraft including the Russian origin Su30 MKI, deep penetration Jaguars, two C17 transport plans and two mid air refuellers IL 78.
·        Before reaching Alaska, the AIF aircrafts will travel through Bahrain, Egypt, France, Portugal and Canada.
·        It will also see over 150 IAF personnel in action, who will undergo some training before being sent to Alaska. According to an estimate, it will cost India over 100 crore rupees.
Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited, India’s first SPV on smart city, started operations:
·        India’s first special purpose vehicle (SPV) on smart city - Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited - commenced operations on 1 April 2016.
·        The SPV was set up as per the Smart City Mission Guidelines to enable faster execution of projects by delegating to them powers of various concerned departments and agencies.
·        Incidentally, Bhubaneswar also topped the 1st batch of 20 smart cities list that was released by the Union Ministry of Urban Development on 28 January 2016.
Dilli Haat to house Abdul Kalam memorial:
·        The Delhi government has passed a proposal to build a memorial for late President APJ Abdul Kalam at Dilli Haat, south Delhi.
·        The memorial will display his belongings and showcase his contributions to the field of science.
·        The original plan was to convert Kalam's residence at Lutyens' zone into a memorial. However, it was allotted to Union Minister Mahesh Sharma.
Telangana to set up two electronic clusters in Hyderabad, eying $7.5billion business:
·        Telangana, which unveiled Information Technology policy with various incentives pertaining to land and power and reimbursement of stamp duty and registration fee among others, is eying $7.5 billion of production of electronics by 2020 from $1 billion.
·        Aimed at promoting the use of information technology across verticals, India’s newest state also unveiled sectoral policies focussed on innovation, electronics, gaming and animation and rural technology.
Government to develop 25 regional airports: Arun Jaitley
·        Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that government has plans to develop 25 regional airports to improve air connectivity in the country.
·        Speaking at a conference in New Delhi, the Finance Minister said the government is looking to develop 15 airstrips owned by the state governments and 10 that are with the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

World’s first public dengue vaccination programme launched in Philippines:
·        The world’s first public dengue vaccination programme was launched in thePhilippines as nurses began injecting the first batch of a million children with a French drug to combat the sometimes deadly disease.
·        The Philippines had the highest dengue incidence in the WHO’s Western Pacific region from 2013 to 2015, recording 200,415 cases last year, according to the Department of Health.
·        Dengvaxia, developed by the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi Pasteur, obtained its first license in Mexico in December 2015 for use in individuals aged 9 to 45.
Panama paper leak triggers tax evasion probes across the globe:
·        Spain, France and several other countries have launched tax evasion probes after a massive leak of confidential documents lifted the lid on the murky offshore financial dealings of a slew of politicians and celebrities.
·        The scandal erupted when media groups began revealing the results of a year-long investigation into a trove of 11.5 million documents from the law firm Mossack Fonseca, which specialises in creating offshore shell companies in the tax haven of Panama.

GoAir elevated Wolfgang Prock-Schauer as Managing Director:
·        Go Airlines (India) Ltd. elevated its present chief executive officer (CEO) Wolfgang Prock-Schauer as the managing director.
·        After this elevation, he will now become a member of the company's board. He will also hold twin charge of both CEO & managing director.
·        Prock-Schauer, who joined the company in June 2015, will hold the managing director’s post along with the promoter of GoAir Jeh Wadia.
Indian Manish Sharma appointed to Panasonic’s Global Executive Council:
·        Japanese electronics giant Panasonic appointed senior executive Manish Sharma of India to its global executive council.
·        It inducted an Indian onto the coveted decision-making body of the 80-billion dollar company for the first time ever.
·        Sharma is the first Indian and fourth non-Japanese member of the 50-member Council headed by a global president.
·        Earlier, Panasonic also appointed Daizo Ito, former president of Indian operations, as managing executive officer, Panasonic Corporation.
BANKING :
RBI cuts repo rate by 25 basis points to 6.5%:
·        The RBI cut the repo rate by 25 basis points to a five-year low of 6.5% in its bi-monthly monetary policy review meeting.
·        The key interest rate was earlier cut by 125 basis points in 2015.
·        Further, the RBI increased the reverse repo rate by 25 basis points to 6% while maintaining the cash reserve ratio at 4%
·        The Reserve Bank has the SLR by 25 basis points to 21.25 % of net demand and time liabilities (NDTL).
·        The central bank has reduced the MSF rate by 75 basis points from 7.75 % to 7 %.

Mukesh Bansal invests in fitness startup Cult:
·        Myntra Co-Founder Mukesh Bansal invested an undisclosed sum in Bangalore-based Cult, a fitness startup focused on training programmes without using traditional gym equipment.
·        Founded in 2015 by Rishabh Telang and Deepak Poduval, Cult doesn't provide treadmills or fitness machines to users instead it offers boxing rings, jump ropes, boxing bags, tyres and speed chutes.
India signs $100mn export pact with IDB:
·        India has signed an MoU with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) for apossible $100 million line of credit to facilitate exports to IDB's member countries.
·        The Saudi Arabia-based bank currently has 56 member states including Egypt, Qatar and Kuwait, and promotes development in these countries by providing facilities and investments which are in accordance with the Islamic Sharia law.
Powergrid commissions Rs 30,300 crore transmission projects in FY16:
·        Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has commissioned transmission projects worth Rs 30,300 crore during 2015-16.
·        It is the highest-ever commissioning achieved by the Navratna company in its history.
·        The Company achieved the planned Capex of 22 thousand 500 crore rupees.

Ballast water conveying obtrusive species to Indian coasts:
·        Researchers expect that ballast water carried by ships is giving a vehicle to get non-native intrusive species over the Indian Coast.
·        In such manner, a study was led by the Department of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, University of Kerala.
·        The survey has found 10 invasive species in the biodiversity rich intertidal habitats of the Kerala coast including one seaweed, one species of bryozoan, one species of mollusc and seven species of ascidian.
Indian Scientists develop biopolymer for water purification:
·        Team of Scientists from Institute of Advance Study in Science & Technology in Assam have developed an eco-friendly nano technology for water-softening applications.
·        The team crafted a biopolymer using a naturally occurring substance, called chitosan(obtained from the hard outer skeleton of shellfish, including crab, lobster, and shrimp) as a backbone for the carbon nanoparticles.
·        They remove calcium and magnesium components of water through ion exchange, the same process that is used by common water purifiers.
·        This material of its kind with potential to act as a biodegradable and green material for water-softening applications and conventional water-softening techniques use synthetic resins.
·        This could be used in civic water treatment plants.
BBM update allows users to retract messages:
·        BlackBerry has launched a BBM update allowing unlimited access to Retract and Timer, formerly a part of BBM subscription.
·        With Retract, users can retract messages and pictures from recipients in case they were mistakenly sent, or were to be made inaccessible.
·        Also, users can set a timer to control how long contacts can view messages and pictures.
Face book rolls out app that describes photos to blind users:
·        Facebook is training its computers to help blind and visually impaired people scroll through the pictures posted on the world’s largest online social network.
·        The feature rolling out Facebook’s iPhone app interprets what’s in a picture using a form of artificial intelligence that recognises faces and objects.
·        The iPhone’s built-in screen reader, VoiceOver, must be turned on for Facebook’s photo descriptions to be read. For now, the feature will only be available in English.

·        Google has started rolling out healthcare information in India in the Knowledge Graph, providing data of over 400 health conditions in English and Hindi.
·        Google Search will display additional information when a user searches about common health conditions, highlighting typical symptoms, whether it's contagious, what ages it affects, and more. Users can download the instructions in PDF also.

Kenya’s Kotut and Jepkesho win Paris Marathon:
·        Kenya’s Cyprian Kotut claimed a double in the French capital within a month when he won this year’s Paris Marathon in personal best of 2 hours, 07 minutes and 13 seconds.
·        Kotut became the 12th Kenya to win the race and put his case straight ahead of the national marathon team selection for Rio Olympic Games later this month after London Marathon on April 24.
·        In the women’s race, Kenya’s Visiline Jepkesho atoned for her last year’s third place finish to win this year’s Paris Marathon in 2 hours 25 minutes and 57 seconds.
Sarfaraz Ahmed named as Pakistan's T20I captain:
·        Pakistani wicketkeeper-batsman, Sarfaraz Ahmed has been named as the new captain of the T20I squad.

Virat Kohli, India retain No.1 spot in T20 rankings, Jasprit Bumrah breaks into top-10:
·        India’s star batsman Virat Kohli has maintained his number one position in the ICC T20 batsmen rankings and so have India in the team charts after the conclusion of the World T20.
·        West Indies’ Samuel Badree is the number-one ranked bowler and he leads fellow wrist-spinner Imran Tahir of South Africa by 50 points, while India’s Ravichandaran Ashwin is in third position.
OBITUARY:
Former Bombay Ranji player RanjanBaindoor passes away:
·        Former Mumbai Ranji Trophy player RanjanBaindoor died on April 4 due to a fatal heart attack at his residence in Mumbai.
·        Mumbai left-arm spinner played for the then Bombay Ranji team from 1974-75 to 1984-85.
·        Baindoor was also the former secretary of Tata Sports Club and served as the chairman of the selection committee for the under-19 team.
·        He is the former Mumbai left-arm spinner and current member of the selection committee of the senior andUnder-23 sides.




1. 5th April : National Maritime Day
i. As we all know that 5th April is marked as the National Maritime Day of India to commemorate the sailing of India’s first steamship Loyalty on April 5th 1919 from Mumbai to London. 

ii. But from 1964 the day has been observed as National Maritime Day and all major ports observe this day celebrating India’s seafaring traditions and journeys. 
iii. Since the dawn of history Indians have participated in international sea-borne commerce. The advent of Europeans opened India’s coasts for trade and commerce. After Independence Indian shipping began to progress at a rapid pace. 
iv. The Indian Navy, which is responsible for guarding the country’s shores and protecting our shipping in times of war, has also considerably expanded and strengthened into a potent force.
v. India has about 7516 kilometres of coastline serviced by a total of 182 ports, 12 of them under a special status as Major Ports being under the purview of the Central Government. 70 other ports termed as minor ones come under the jurisdiction of the respective State Governments. Ennore in Tamil Nadu has been declared as the 12th Major Port.

2. First Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement, 2016-17
i. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today cuts the Repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) by 25 basis points to 6.5% in its first bi-monthly monetary policy review for the 2016-17 fiscal and kept the Cash Reserve Rate (CRR) unchanged. 
ii. Repo Rate is the rate at which banks borrow from the central bank. One basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point. The repo rate now stands at 6.5%, the lowest it has been since March 2011. With this, Home, auto and other loans are set to become cheaper.
iii. However, the RBI cut the reverse repo, or the rate at which banks park excess funds with the central bank, to 6%, narrowing the policy corridor between the repo and reverse repo by 50 bps, bringing the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate to 7.0%. 
iv. But the CRR has been kept unchanged at 4.0 per cent of net demand and time liabilities (NDTL). 
v. Stating the inflation objectives to be closer to reality and price-rise will hover around the 5 per cent mark during current fiscal, Rajan reaffirmed that the monetary policy will continue to remain accommodative to address the growth concerns. And The RBI, projected the GDP growth around 7.6% for FY 2017. 

3. India's Fastest Train "Gatiman Express" Flagged Off From Delhi To Agra
i. Gatiman Express, India's fastest train is flagged off from Delhi to Agra. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu flagged off the much-awaited Gatiman Express for Agra from Nizamuddin Railway station today. 

ii. The Nizamuddin-Agra Gatiman Express is the first semi-high speed service in railways and will run at a speed of 160 km per hour, covering the 188 kilometer distance in 100 minutes.
iii. The train will run six days a week except Friday in both directions. It will start journey from Nizamuddin at 8.10 AM and will reach Agra at 9.50 AM. In the return direction, train will depart from Agra at 5.50 PM to reach Nizamuddin at 7.30 PM. 
iv. The Gatiman Express train comprises two executive AC chair cars and eight AC chair car coaches. The fare for an AC chair car seat is set at Rs 750 and that for an executive AC chair car seat at Rs 1,500.
v. The Gatimaan’s coaches have been built at Kapurthala Railway Coach Factory in the Punjab and bio-toilets developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The cost of train is around Rs 50 crore.

5. World's 1st Sanctuary For White Tigers Opens In MP
i. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh along with Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar and other dignitaries have inaugurated the world's first wildlife sanctuary for white tigers in Madhya Pradesh. 

ii. The Safari was inaugurated at Mukundpur in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh. 
iii. The first of its kind safari is situated adjacent to the Mukundpur Zoological Park. 
iv. It is spread over an area of 25 hectares and has been built at cost of 50 crore rupees. 
v. The safari houses three white tigers, including two females named Vindhya and Radha and one male named Raghu.

6. Aadhaar enrollments hit 100 cr.
i. Over 100 crore people, including 93% of the adult population, now have an Aadhaar number.
ii. As per the Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, “Aadhaar crossing the 100-crore mark is indeed a momentous occasion will give boost to government’s initiative of bringing a systematic change in the way services, subsidies and benefits will be directly delivered to the deserving masses.” 
iii. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) had generated 100 crore Aadhaar numbers in five-and half years since the first Aadhaar was issued in 2010.
iv. Aadhaar is a 12 digit individual identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India on behalf of the Government of India. 
v. This number will serve as a proof of identity and address, anywhere in India. Aadhaar letter received via India Post and e-Aadhaar downloaded from UIDAI website are equally valid.

7. Internal security chief Tran Dai Quang sworn in as Vietnam's president
i. Tran Dai Quang has sworn in as the ninth President of Vietnam after he was elected by country’s National Assembly. 

ii. He succeeds Truong Tan Sang and shall have term of five years. 
iii. He was elected as President after he had secured 91.5% votes that is 452 valid votes out of the total 494 members of the unicameral house. 
iv. Tran Dai Quang Prior to getting elected as the President of Vietnam, Quang had served as Minister of Public Security of the country from 2011 to 2016. 
v. He is a member of the 12th Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam and is currently ranked second after General Secretary Nguyen Phu Tr. In August 2011 he was appointed Secretary of the Central Police Party Committee In 1972, he had attended the People’s Police School.

8. Government releases Rs. 25,834 crore to FCI as Food Subsidy
i. The Government has released Rs. 25,834 crore to FCI as Food Subsidy. In addition to this, wage and means advance of Rs. 10,000 crore will be released shortly. 
ii. FCI is also raising short term loans from banks upto a maximum limit of Rs. 30,000 crore. Recourse to these loans will be made by FCI as and when required. 
iii. Taken together these funds, there will be sufficient resources to manage Rabi procurement which has just started.
iv. In 2015-16, original Food Subsidy allocation was Rs. 97,000 crore which was increased to Rs. 1,12,000 crore at RE stage. This helped to bring down the arrears of subsidy to Rs. 58,650 crore. 
v. During 2016-17 also the Government may consider additional food subsidy over and above budgetary provision, if required, towards the end of financial year to further bring down the subsidy arrears. 

9. World’s first public dengue vaccination programme launched in Philippines
i. The world’s first public dengue vaccination programme was launched in the Philippines as nurses began injecting the first batch of a million children with a French drug to combat the sometimes deadly disease.

ii. Hundreds of fourth-graders at a public school in metropolitan Manila’s Marikina city were given the first of three shots of Dengvaxia.
iii. The Philippines had the highest dengue incidence in the WHO’s Western Pacific region from 2013 to 2015, recording 200,415 cases last year, according to the Department of Health.
iv. The government is spending 3.5 billion pesos ($98 million) to administer the free vaccines, which it bought at a discounted cost of 3,000 pesos ($85) for three doses for each child.
v. Dengvaxia, developed by the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi Pasteur, obtained its first license in Mexico in December 2015 for use in individuals aged 9 to 45. Regulatory agencies in Brazil, the Philippines and El Salvador followed. But the vaccine is awaiting regulatory reviews in Europe and dozens of non-European countries, as well as prequalification by the WHO.

10. Viswanathan Anand to be feted with Hridaynath Award
i. 5 times world chess champion Viswanathan Anand will be honoured with the Hridaynath Award, which felicitates and recognises successful individuals across the country from various walks of life. 
ii. The honour will be a cash award of Rs 2 lakh and a memento.State Governor C Vidyasagar Rao will present the award to the 46-year-old sportsman at an event here on April 12. 
iii. The previous recipients of the award include eminent personalities like Lata Mangeshkar, Babasaheb Purandare, Asha Bhosle, Amitabh Bachchan, Hariprasad Chaurasia and A R Rahman.

11. Former Italy coach Cesare Maldini passes away
i. Former Italy head coach Cesare Maldini has passed away at the age of 84. 
ii. The former AC Milan defender took charge of the national team in 1996, replacing Arrigo Sacchi, and successfully qualified for the 1998 World Cup. 

iii.Maldini played for Milan from 1954 to 1966 and was a star for the club before son Paolo went on to become a legend in his own right. He helped the club win four Scudetti along with their first European Cup in 1963 when they sealed a 2-1 win over Benfica.
iv. At club level, Maldini won 4 Serie A league titles and 1 European Cup with Milan. Internationally, he played for the Italian national team, earning 14 caps and participating in the 1962 World Cup. 
v. As a coach, he had a successful career in charge of the Italian Under-21 side, winning the European Under-21 Championship a record three consecutive times.

12. Kenya’s Kotut and Jepkesho win Paris Marathon
i. Kenya’s Cyprian Kotut claimed a double in the French capital within a month when he won this year’s Paris Marathon in personal best of 2 hours, 07 minutes and 13 seconds. 
ii. Kotut, the brother to three-time London Marathon champion Martin Lel, overtook Ethiopian Abraha Gebretsadik with three kilometres to go, pumping his pistons past the 40km mark in 2:00:34 to victory.
iii. Defending champion Mark Korir settled second in 2:07:31 as Commonwealth Games marathon silver medallist Stephen Chemlany waylaid Gebretsadik to ensure a Kenyan podium sweep in 2:07:39. 
iv. Micah Kogo of Kenya settled fourth in 2:07:43 as Gebretsadik came in fifth in 2:08:05. The 24-year-old Kotut was fresh from Paris Half Marathon last month in 1:01:00. Having recorded a personal best of 59:12 for the half marathon in 2014, Kotut made his marathon debut in Milan in 2015 and finished second in 2:08:55.
v. Kotut became the 12th Kenya to win the race and put his case straight ahead of the national marathon team selection for Rio Olympic Games later this month after London Marathon on April 24.
