NATIONAL:
Meteorological Department to start India’s first heat index:
·         As several parts of the country experience heatwaves, and with summer temperatures steadily on the rise, India is set to get its own heat index.
·         Starting this month, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the first time will introduce a heat index for the country.
·         The index will be available on the IMD website, and will be updated every three hours across all weather stations.
·         A heat index – a measure of how hot it really feels – is calculated based on actual temperatures and relative humidity levels. The index will give citizens accurate and updated information on the heat conditions specific to their areas.
Supreme Court allows common entrance test for all medical courses:
·         The Supreme Court today paved the way for implementation of National Eligibility Entrance Test, NEET for medical courses across the country.

·         The top court set aside its 2013 order by which the common entrance test for admissions to MBBS, BDS and PG courses in all medical colleges was quashed.
India, Maldives sign six agreements in different sectors:
·         India and Maldives have signed six agreements in different sectors including avoidance of double taxation, conservation and restoration of ancient mosque, tourism and defence.
Five lakh ponds to be created under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana: Agriculture Minister
·         Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said five lakh ponds would be created under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana.
·         The Minister said, this year, centre has allocated 12,500 crore rupees for the completion of 23 irrigation projects and a corpus of 20 thousand crore has been planned for irrigation development.

·         Mr Singh said, center will distribute soil health cards to all 14 crore farmers in the country by march 2017. He said, this scheme aims at promoting soil test based and balanced use of fertilizers so that farmers can realize higher yield at lower cost.
Prime Minister pays tributes to Mahatma Jyotiba Phule:
·         Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid tributes to social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule on his birth anniversary.
·         Inspired by Mahatma Phule's ideals, the Prime Minister called on people to collectively work to create an equal and harmonious society where the role of education is pivotal.
Centre to Issue Universal ID-Cards for Differently-Abled People:
·         Union government is set to issue universal identity cards to the physically challenged with the objective of providing them easy access to various benefits being extended by the government.
·         The government was progressing towards distribution of modern motorized wheelchairs with British financial assistance and was also taking up the manufacturing of tricycles with German technological backup.

·         Besides, steps were taken to provide barrier–free access to all government buildings in 50 cities and towns in a phased manner.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal Lays Foundation Stone for IPDS Work:
·         Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal laid the foundation stone for underground cabling work under Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS) in Varanasi. The Ministry has sanctioned Rs. 432 crores for the project.
Kashi-IPDS Mobile App:
·         The minister also launched Kashi-IPDS Mobile App for project monitoring of IPDS activities in Old-Kashi in a transparent manner.
Under Ground Cables Conversion:
·         The IPDS Scheme covers conversion of overhead lines to Underground cables, establishment of 2 new 33 Kv Sub-stations and augmentation of 11 nos. existing Sub-stations.
‘Green UP – Clean UP’ Programme: Five crore trees to be planted in UP:
·         AkileshYadav led Uttar Pradesh government has directed all the district magistrates for plantation of 5 crore trees at 6,500 sites in 24 hours on a date fixed in month of July under the ‘Green UP – Clean UP initiative .‘Green UP - Clean UP’ Programme.
·         The State Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan notified to DMs that the coding of plantation sites should be done according to IGRS based coding of NIC.
·         All online data of plantation sites should be prepared with the cooperation of NIC to ensure effective district-wise monitoring.

·         The government will provide electricity to all villages in Uttar Pradesh located in remote locations and aims to provide electricity 24/7 to every household in India by 2019.

·         About 1,364 had been electrified under the rural electrification Programme since the NDA government came to power at the Centre.
·         The State has also become the fastest State to replace one crore bulbs with energy-efficient LEDs distributed under the Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) Programme.
Prime Minister visits Puttingal Devi Temple following fire mishap:
·         Prime Minister visited the Puttingal Devi temple at Kollam, following fire mishap.
·         The mishap happened due to the display of fireworks occurred on the last day of the seven-day ‘Meena Bharani’ festivities.
·         The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia relief of 2 lakh each from PMNRF for the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the fire in Kollam.

·         The PM also announced a solatium of Rs. 50, 000 to those who are injured in the fire.
Government announces 1,304 crore relief for UP drought:
·         The Union government announced 1,304 crore in drought relief to farmers in Uttar Pradesh's Bundelkhand region.
·         The UP government will disburse these funds directly into the bank accounts of the affected farmers within a week.
·         In a meeting of State and Union government officials, the NITI Aayog was directed to explore fresh projects aimed at "drought-proofing" the region.
Punjab to give scholarship to brilliant students:
·         Ahead of the 125th anniversary of BR Ambedkar, the Punjab government has announced scholarships for meritorious students in matriculation and class XII exams.

·         The state government will provide 1 lakh each to 125 students who performed brilliantly in matriculation and 1.5 lakh each to another 125 students for class XII exam, state Education Minister Daljit Singh Cheema Said.
Government to involve private sector in cyber security:
·         The government has decided to involve private sector domain experts in tackling cyber crime through proactive monitoring.
·         For this, the interested organisations need to showcase their expertise in the cyber security domain on April 12 and 19.
·         Earlier, the government had said that a 400-crore cyber crime control hub would be set up to check cyber crime and child pornography.

·         China and Sri Lanka have decided to redefine the Colombo Port City project by making it an international financial outpost in the Indian Ocean, as part of the 20-year framework.
·         The two sides will use the development of a 21st Century Maritime Silk Road as an opportunity to further advance infrastructure development, promote joint ventures and expand cooperation in the areas of economy, culture, science and technology and people to people contacts.
Dubai to build tower taller than Burj Khalifa:
·         Dubai plans to build a tower that will stand higher than its BurjKhalifa, currently the world’s tallest skyscraper, will be built by property developer Emaar.

India offers $20 billion investment in Iran :
·         India has offered to invest up to $20 billion in Iran announced by Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradha during his two day visit to Iran.
·         This was the first visit by an Indian minister since the US and other western powers lifted sanctions against Iran in January.
Pakistan Navy successfully test-fires shore-based anti-ship missile:
·         The Pakistan Navy has successfully conducted a test launch of the shore-based anti-ship Zarb Missile.

Chinese researchers introduce Graphene based all-weather solar cell:
·         Chinese researchers have now introduced a new approach for making an all-weather solar cell developed a highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cell.
·         To enable rain to produce electricity as well, they coated this cell with a whisper-thin film of.
·         Graphene is a 2D form of carbon in which the atoms are bonded into a honeycomb arrangement. It can readily be prepared by the oxidation, exfoliation, and subsequent reduction of graphite.
·         The graphene shows high crystal quality with the reported lowest wrinkle height of 0.8 nm and a carrier mobility of greater than 7,100 cm2V−1 s−1 under ambient conditions.

Ukraine PM to resign, blaming politicians failure to enact real changes:
·         Ukraine Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has announced, he will resign this week, blaming politicians failure to enact real changes.
·         The President Petro Poroshenko asked him to quit in February saying he had lost support.

·         Yatsenyuk's government has been accused of inaction and corruption. The International Monetary Fund has threatened to withhold aid money if it does not carry out reforms. Parliamentary Speaker Volodymyr Groysman has been nominated by Mr poroshenko's party to replace Mr Yatsenyuk.
World tiger count rises for 1st time in 100 yrs:
·         The number of tigers in the world has increased for the first time in over 100 years.
·         A study by the World Wildlife Fund and the Global Tiger Forum found that there are 3,890 tigers, a significant increase from the lowest 3,200 tigers recorded in 2010.
·         This was reportedly driven by successful tiger conservation programmes in India, Nepal and Russia.

RBI holds 8 lakh crore of government bonds: Rajan
·         RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan said that the bank holds government bonds worth 8 lakh crore (around $120.54 billion) alongside record foreign reserves of $360 billion for the week ended April 1.
·         Meanwhile, Rajan warned the public about fictitious e-mails demanding money in RBI's name in the wake of complaints about such e-mails seen on the rise.

Indian-South African judge Navaneetham Pillay bags top French honour:
·         Tamil descendent Judge Navanetham Pillay, South Africa’s first non-white woman judge who is of Indian origin, has been convened upon the highest French civilian the Legion of Honour.
·         Pillay is presently the 16th commissioner of the Madrid-based International Commission against the Death Penalty, which works with the United Nations and other bodies in promoting the abolition of capital punishment.
·         She was the first non-white woman judge of the high court of South Africa and has also served as president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda which tried leaders of a genocide.

Food and Drug Administration approves world's smallest pacemaker:
·         The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the world's smallest pacemaker, Micra Transcatheter Pacing System, measuring about the size of a large vitamin or one-tenth the size of traditional devices.

·         It is the first miniaturized device with pacing technology to get approval from the US government. In initial trials, the device was successfully implanted in over 99% of patients.

·         New York based Microblogging platform Twitter has acquired employee and manager feedback startup Peer.
·         This Feedback tool was launched by former Salesforce COO George Hu in 2015.

·         Peer used to create an environment where employees could monitor their performance continuously and send the reviews one to another.
BSNL testing WiFi-based network to connect about 1 lakh village panchayats:
·         Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has started testing of WiFi based network to connect 1 lakh panchayats under rural broadband project of Government.
·         BSNL testing WiFi-based network to connect about 1 lakh village panchayats.
·         The State Run Company in connection with Vihaan Networks has started testing the sustainability of WiFi network in three villages – Karenda, Phalsa and Bahadri – in Alwar district of Rajasthan.
·         Under this project a wireless network over six kilometers has been set up.
·         The project is being handled by a SPV under the Telecom Ministry which has distributed work to three CPSUs BSNL, Railtel and Powergrid.
Scientists find new Zika-linked brain disorder:
·         Scientists have found a new brain disorder linked to Zika infections in adults, an autoimmune syndrome named acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, that attacks the brain and spinal cord.

·         Zika has already been linked to the autoimmune disorder Guillain-Barre syndrome, that attacks the peripheral nervous system. The finding shows Zika may also provoke an immune attack on the central nervous system.

Knight Riders beat Delhi Daredevils by 9 wickets:
·         In the second match of the Indian Premier League, two-time winners, Kolkata Knight Riders defeated the Delhi Daredevils by 9 wickets.
·         Delhi scored under 100 for the 7th time in IPL history, being bowled out for 98, with man-of-the-match Andre Russell finishing with figures of 3/24. The Knight Riders chased down the total with 35 balls to spare.
Mishra becomes 2nd highest wicket taker in IPL:
·         Delhi Daredevils' leg-spinner Amit Mishra, after picking up his 112th Indian Premier League (IPL) wicket while playing against Kolkata Knight Riders, became the second-highest wicket taker in the league.

·         Mishra's tally surpassed Piyush Chawla and Harbhajan Singh's haul of 111 wickets. Notably, Mumbai Indians' pacer Lasith Malinga leads the list with 143 IPL wickets in the competition.
Indian Women finish 6th at Hawke's Bay Cup:
·         The Indian women’s hockey team went down 3-4 to Ireland in a penalty shootout to finish 6th in the Hawke’s Bay Cup.
·         Both teams were tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation time as Deirdre Duke and Namita Toppo scored for Ireland and India respectively.
·         Notably, India had finished 7th in the previous edition of the tournament.

Maldivian President Gayoom to arrive in New Delhi today:

·        Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom will arrive in New Delhi today on a two-day visit to India.
·        India and the Maldives commemorated 50 years of diplomatic relations last year and both countries have historically close relationship.
·        President Gayoom’s first visit after assumption of office was to India in January 2014. He was amongst the SAARC leaders who attended the swearing-in of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

·        US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter will arrive India today on his three-day visit.

Centre releases Rs 12,230 crore for MGNREGA:

·        Ministry of Rural Development has released a central share of Rs. 12,230 Crore to the States in connection with the implementation of its flagship programme Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.
·        This is the biggest amount for the scheme released in one go by the ministry.
·        The Minister also underlined that this fund release will take care of the pending wage liability of the States for the previous Financial Year (2015-16) and help the States to run the Programme during the new Financial Year (2016-17).
·        The Ministry has also planned to maintain 60:40 wage-material ratio at the District level now to ensure creation of good quality assets in the rural areas.
Gurgaon to get India’s first Metrino Pod Taxi project:
·        The Central Government gave its stamp of approval to the nation’s first Metrino Pod project –A Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) network in Gurgaon, Haryana.
·        The announcement in this regard has been made by Haryana Public Works (Building and Roads) Minister Rao Narbir Singh.
Union Government constitutes B B Tandon Committee to monitor Government Advertisements:

·        Information and Broadcasting Ministry has formed a three-member Committee to oversee the guidelines set for government advertisements by the Supreme Court are followed.
·        The committee to be headed by the former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) B BTandon.
·        The Chairman will be assisted by two members namely TV journalist Rajat Sharma and ad-man Piyush Pandey will be the other two members of the committee.
·        The committee was constituted by I&B Ministry based on the recommendation of the three-member selection committee comprising Press Council Chairman Justice C K Prasad.
DIPP launches web-based dashboard for monitoring commitments of ministries under Make in India:
·        Union government disclosed two dashboards to dynamically monitor progress made in its Make in India initiative as well as rank States on a real-time basis based on Ease of Doing Business.
·        Around 21 Ministries covering 22 Sectors identified to boost manufacturing and services as part of the Make in India will view and update the progress of each of their action plans on the dashboard.
Textiles Minister inaugurates Apparel and Garment Making Unit in Tripura:

·        The Union Textiles Minister Shri Santosh Kumar Gangwar inaugurated the Apparel and Garment Making unit in Bodhjungnagar Industrial Growth Centre, in Agartala today.
·        The Minister said that the Apparel Units in the North East are a significant step towards the Make in India Initiative of the Government.
·        As per the Shri Gangwar when ‘Make in India’ was conceived to make the country a manufacturing destination, it was decided that the potential of the NER, which is a stronghold of handlooms and traditional textiles, may be tapped for ready-made garment industry.

Sagarmala project will create 1 Crore jobs: Gadkari
·        Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said one crore jobs will be created in the shipping and ports sector alone, under the government’s Sagarmala project in the next 4-5 years.
·        The project is aimed at promoting port-led development in India by harnessing its 7,500-km long coastline, 14,500-km of potentially navigable waterways and strategic locations on key international maritime trade routes.
Goverment okays 1k crore projects to ease Delhi traffic:

·        The government approved projects under which underpasses and overbridges would be constructed at three junctions at IFFCO Chowk, Signature Tower and Rajiv Chowk to decongest traffic in Delhi and Gurgaon.
·        The projects, having an estimated cost of 1,000 crore, would be completed in a span of two-and-a-half years, a Road Transport and Highways Ministry official said.
Maharashtra to put all major public services online:
·        Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the state government will put all major public services online this year.
·        Maharashtra will be launching a mobile application and a payment gateway where people can pay for government services.
·        Fadnavis said 150 public-related services have already been taken online, and 100 more will be added by October end.
Sajibu Cheiraoba festival celebrated in Manipur:

·        The traditional festival of Sajibu Cheiraoba has been celebrated in Manipur to mark the beginning of a new year with cultural gusto and religious fervor.
·        The festival is mainly observed on the first lunar day of the lunar month  March and April by the Meiteis community, a majority ethnic group of Manipur.

William, Kate pay tributes to 26/11 victims:

·        The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton paid tributes to the victims of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, after their arrival in the city today.

·        They laid a wreath at the memorial at the Taj Palace Hotel, and spoke to the hotel staff who were present when it was attacked in November 2008.
$200 mn agreement was signed to study TAPI Project:
·        In order to transport natural gas to energy starved countries like India, shareholders of the Turkmenistan- Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) Pipeline Company Limited inked an accord to invest $200 million in studies and engineering for the $10 billion project.
·        It will help Pakistan’s energy security, bring economic benefits to the general population through job opportunities and upgrade the associated infrastructure.
·        The agreement was signed in the presence of petroleum ministers and senior government officials of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Asian Development Bank officials in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
John Kerry makes sudden visit to Afghanistan:

·        US Secretary of State John Kerry made a sudden visit to Afghanistan to show support for the Afghan government and its security forces.
·        He is scheduled to meet President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, political rivals who share power under the 2014 National Unity Government agreement.
·        Notably, Kerry made a sudden visit to Iraq on Friday.
Prince William to play charity match in Mumbai:
·        British royals, Prince William and Kate Middleton, will participate in a charity cricket match at the Oval Maidan, on the first day of their seven-day tour of India which begins on April 10 in Mumbai.

French lawmakers passed a bill banning paying for sex:

·        French lawmakers passed a bill that makes it illegal to pay for sex and imposes fines of up to 3750 Euro (4270 dollar) on sex workers’ clients.
·        The bill was passed by 64 votes to 12 but many French MPs chose to abstain from the vote.
·        Backed by the Socialist government, the legislation makes France only the fifth European country that punishes the clients of sex workers.
·        Other four countries that punish the clients of sex workers are Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Britain.
Japan plans to test fingerprints as currency:
·        The Japanese government is set to begin testing a system that would allow foreign tourists to verify their identities and purchase goods and services using a fingerprint.
·        The experiment would feature fingerprint scanners at popular tourist centers including souvenir shops, restaurants, hotels and other establishments. The government aims to launch it by the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Foreign Ministers of G-7 countries begin meeting in Hiroshima today:

·        Foreign Ministers of the Group of 7 countries have began a meeting in Hiroshima today. The gathering is the first of 10 ministerial talks Japan will host around the G7 summit in central Japan in late May.
·        The meeting is hosting Foreign Ministers from both nuclear and non-nuclear armed states. On Monday, they will visit the memorial park and museum that commemorate the 1945 atomic bombing.
·        Over 2 days, the ministers will also discuss a list of other global issues, including terrorism and the refugee crisis.
U.S. Navy leading 30-nation maritime exercise across Middle Eastern waters:
·        The U.S. Navy is leading a 30-nation maritime exercise across Middle Eastern waters aimed to protect international trade routes against possible threats.
·        The exercise, which is partly being held in the Arabian Gulf, comes as tensions run high between Gulf Arab countries and Iran over its role in the region.
·        U.S. Naval Forces Central Command said the exercise is designed to stop militants from causing disruption to shipping.
Austria considering law to seize Hitler's home:

·        Austria is considering drafting a law that will enable the country to seize the house where Adolf Hitler was born in Braunau.
·        The house owner had refused to sell the old building to the government, which has rented it since 1972.

·        The owner claimed that Austria is determined that the building should never represent an affirming memory of National Socialism.

Priyadarshini Chatterjee crowned Miss India 2016:

·        Priyadarshini Chatterjee from Guwahati was crowned the Miss India World 2016, at the 53rd edition of the beauty pageant held at the Yash Raj Studios.
·        Sushruthi Krishna from Mumbai and Pankhuri Gidwani from Uttar Pradesh became the first and second runners-up respectively.
·        Chatterjee will now represent India at the International platform of Miss World 2016.
Priyanka to get Phalke Film Foundation's Award:
·        Priyanka Chopra will receive the 'Best Actress of the Year' award by the Dadasaheb Phalke Film Foundation for her performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Bajirao Mastani'.
·        The award will be given to her on the occasion of 147th Dadasaheb Phalke Jayanti. The award ceremony will be held on April 24. Notably, this is Priyanka's second award from the Foundation.
Leonardo named best actor at MTV Movie Awards:

·        Leonardo DiCaprio was named the best male actor for 'The Revenant' at the 2016 MTV Movie Awards held in California.

·        Meanwhile, Charlize Theron received the 'Best Female Performance' award for 'Mad Max: Fury Road'. Chris Pratt won the 'Best Action Performance' award for 'Jurassic World' while Ryan Reynold's act in 'Deadpool' won him the Best 'Comedic Performance' title.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
Indian selected for NASA's Innovation programme:

·        A proposal titled "Venus Interior Probe Using In-situ Power and Propulsion", by Ratnakumar Bugga, an Indian-origin scientist, has been selected for NASA's Innovative Advanced Concepts programme.
·        The programme, which is aimed at investing in transformative architectural concepts, will award $100,000 to the selected researchers for a nine-month period to analyse and develop their proposed concepts.
Nuclear Fuel Complex sets new world record:
·        The Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) in Hyderabad, under the Department of Atomic Energy, announced it has set a new world record with production of 1,503 tonnes of nuclear fuel in 2015-16.
·        NFC had earlier become the world’s leading producer in 2014-15, with a 1,252 tonne-production.
·        Further, it is targetting 2,000 tonnes this fiscal, NFC Chairman N Saibaba said.
SPORTS:
India beat Canada to earn first win at Hawke’s Bay Cup:

·        The Indian women’s hockey team ended a close 1-0 victory over Canada in a classification game of the Hawke’s Bay Cup in Hastings, New Zealand.
·        This comes after the hockey team could never recover from three early setbacks and ended up losing the Hawke’s Bay Cup quarterfinal 1-3 to Japan.
·        India had come into the match searching for their first victory against the Canadian team and the first half was played out evenly between both teams.
Rising Pune Supergiants win IPL opener:
·        In the first match of the 2016 Indian Premier League (IPL), newcomers Rising Pune Supergiants defeated the defending champions Mumbai Indians by nine wickets at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.
·        Harbhajan Singh's 45*(30) helped Mumbai Indians post 121. Later, man-of-the-match Ajinkya Rahane scored his fastest IPL fifty, finishing with 66*(42) to help his side register their first ever IPL win.
Joshua crowned new world heavyweight champion:

·        Anthony Joshua knocked out defending champion Charles Martin after one minute and 32 seconds of the second round to become the new International Boxing Federation world heavyweight champion.
·        Joshua has now won all of his 16 fights via knock-outs. Notably, Martin's 94-day reign as world heavyweight champion was the second shortest in world title history.

Toss no longer mandatory in county cricket:
·        According to a new rule by the England Cricket Board, visiting captains in county cricket will be given the option to bowl first or opt for a toss otherwise.
·        The rule, which comes into effect from April 10, has been aimed at encouraging the preparation of better pitches and increasing the use of spin bowling in English county cricket.
OBITUARY:
Former Union Minister C Silvera passes away:

·        Former Congress Minister C Silvera passed away due to a stroke in Aizwal, family sources said.
·        Notably, he was the only politician from Mizoram to be in the Union Council of Ministers.
·        Elected to Rajya Sabha in 1985 and to the ninth, tenth and eleventh Lok Sabha, Silvera (81) is survived by his wife Lallawmzuali and three sons.
