NATIONAL:
Goa to host Int'l seminar on Wheat Products:
·        The eighth International Seminar on Wheat and Wheat Products is scheduled to be held in Panaji, Goa, on July 17-18.
·        "The theme for this year's seminar is 'New Ideas and Innovation for Growth'," Wheat Products Promotion Society Chairman Ratan Gupta said.
·        The seminar, which will have updates on new developments in the area, will be attended by 250 delegates.
India's 1st Beti Garden to celebrate girl child:
·        'Shloka Beti Garden' in Udaipur, an initiative by Devendra Agrawal, founder of the NGO 'Maa Bhagwati Vikas Sansthan', will allow parents and relatives to mark the birth of a girl child by planting a sapling.
·        The garden has been touted as India's first park for the girl child. It aims to address society's prejudices over preference for sons over daughters.
Delhi Metro to get free Wi-Fi facility:
·        Satellite communication provider TechnoSatComm said that Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has awarded a 10-year contract to it to provide free Wi-Fi services to Delhi Metro commuters.
·        Mumbai-based broadcast firm Ping Networks has partnered with the company as the main licensee for providing content.
·        The free-to-customer service will be launched in the second half of this year, it added
Union Government renamed Department of Disinvestment as Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM):
·        Union Government notified that the Department of Disinvestment is renamed as Department of Investment and Public Asset Management or DIPAM.
·        The decision is aimed at proper management of Union government’s investments in equity including its disinvestment in central public sector undertakings (PSUs).
·        The new department has been mandated to advise the government in the matters of financial restructuring of central public sector enterprises and for attracting investment through capital markets.
·        A comprehensive approach will be adopted for efficient management of government investment in Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) by addressing issues such as capital restructuring, dividend, bonus shares, etc.
400 road deaths per day in India; up 5% to 1.46 lakh in 2015:
·        Indian roads, which account for the highest fatalities in the world, became yet more dangerous in 2015 with the number of deaths rising nearly 5% to 1.46 lakh.
·        This translates to 400 deaths a day or one life snuffed out every 3.6 minutes, in what an expert described as a “daily massacre on our roads”.
·        According to provisional police data provided by states, Uttar Pradesh recorded the maximum number of road deaths (17,666), followed by Tamil Nadu (15,642), Maharashtra (13,212), Karnataka (10,856) and Rajasthan (10,510).
Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train to travel under the sea near Thane creek:
·        Passengers will get the thrill of riding under the sea while travelling between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in the first bullet train of the country.
·        The 508 km long Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed rail corridor will have a 21 km long tunnel under the sea, said a senior Railway Ministry official involved with the public transporter’s ambitious bullet train project.
7 women officers of SSC granted permanent commission by Navy:
·        Breaking gender barrier, seven women officers have been granted permanent commission by Indian Navy.
·        The women officers belong to the batch of Short Service Commission officers, who joined in 2008-09.
·        Navy is the last of the three wings of the armed forces in the country to allow permanent commission for women. While the Army and Air Force allow permanent commission for them, the Navy had limited women officers only to short service commission of 14 years.

Women allowed to enter Maharashtra’s Trimbakeshwar temple:
·        Signalling a major social change, women were permitted entry to the Trimbakeshwar temple in Nashik District of Maharashtra.
·        The temple has one of the 12 ‘Jyotirlingas’ in the country. A group of three women activists of the Swarajya Sanghatana led by Vanita Gutte, was allowed to enter the temple amidst tight security.

India headed for top slot in global LED bulb market:
·        India is poised to emerge as the largest market for lighting systems based on LEDs (light-emitting diodes), thanks to the Narendra Modi-led government’s UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All) scheme for replacing all inefficient bulbs with these energy-efficient lamps.
·        More than 9.7 crore LED bulbs have been distributed so far under the scheme.
Pranab to visit Beijing in last week of May
·        In a sign of suddenly accelerated contact between India and China, President Pranab Mukherjee will travel to Beijing at the end of May.
·        The President, who will also travel to Singapore on the same visit is expected to be in China in May last week, and will travel to Beijing and the South Eastern Chinese business hub of Guangzhou, also known for its Buddhist connection to India.
Cabinet approves signing the Paris Agreement:
·        The Union Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved for signing the Paris Agreement adopted at the 21st Conference of Parties held in Paris in last December.
·        Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar will sign the agreement from India side on 22 April 2016 at the high level signature ceremony convened by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Dr. Mahesh Sharma Unveils Gold Finial at Humayun’s Tomb:
·        Culture and Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma unveiled the restored 18 feet tall Finial at Humayun’s Tomb, New Delhi as part of the ongoing conservation effort.
·        The Tomb is a UNESCO World Heritage Site one of three in the capital has reinstated with a gold crown.
·        The Humayun’s Tomb is model of the 18-feet tall structure weighs about 300-kg finial made of 4 percent pure copper and plated with 3.5 kg of 24-carat gold.
Dr. Harsh Vardhan visit to Nagaland:
·        Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Science Harsh Vardhan in his a two-day maiden visit to Nagaland.
·        During the visit he inaugurated DBT created Biotech Infrastructure facility at ICAR- National Research Centre on Mithun, Jharnapani.
·        The minister also inaugurated Twinning Network Project on Chemical Ecology of North Eastern Region at Nagaland Science and Technology Council.
Government merges Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan with Khelo India:
·        The Union Government has merged Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan with Khelo India.
·        They merged another two sport projects which were launched during UPA Government.

·        During the 2016-17 budget Rs 140 crore allocated for the above projects.
MoU on Youth Exchange Programmes with Foreign countries:
·        The Union Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi was apprised of the Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) signed with Bahrain, Kuwait, Nepal, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and BRICS Nations on Organizing Youth Exchange Programmes with these countries.
·        International Youth Exchange programmes support exchange of ideas and values amongst youth of different countries and help in developing international view among the youth.
·        The MoU will pave the way for people-to-people contacts, these Programmes promote peace and understanding and strengthen friendly relations between countries.
MoU between India and Bhutan on Technical Cooperation in the Field of Capacity
Building, Benchmarking and Bilateral Exchange in Infrastructure Engineering:
·        The Union Cabinet approved for signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Bhutan on technical cooperation in the field of capacity building, benchmarking and bilateral exchange in infrastructure engineering.
Ceasefire in Nagaland extended by one year:
·        Union Government and National Socialist Council of Nagaland, under the leadership of N. KitoviZhimomi and M.B NeokpaoKonyak have mutually agreed to extend the Cease Fire Agreement by another year with effect from April 28.
·        The agreement targets to bring lasting peace in the state of Nagaland with the involvement of Naga people.
·        Both the sides agreed that the ceasefire will follow to Ceasefire Ground Rules (CFGR) as mutually ratified. The CFGR will subject to mutual review and amendment with the involvement of both the parties.
India to Purchase 145 M777 Howitzers for US$ 750 Million:
·        India is expected to buy 145 M777 Howitzers for $750 million to prepare its Mountain Strike Corps.
·        The decision to buy ultra-light Howitzers produced by UK based BAE Systems under the Make In India.
·        Under Make in India iniative BAE Systems had tied up Mahindra as its business partner for its proposed in-country assembly, integration and test (AIT) facility for the M777 Howitzer.
·        The proposed gun comes with laser inertial artillery pointing systems (LINAPS), maintenance, personnel training and training equipment, technical assistance, engineering and logistics support services.
·        The Army aims to use the howitzers to modernize its forces and develop Operational Conditions.
Deen Dayal Jan Awas Yojana notified by Haryana Government:
·        Haryana government has notified the Affordable Plotted Housing Policy 2016 for low and medium standard towns under Deen Dayal Jan Awas Yojana.
·        This is to achieve the goal of providing houses for all which will facilitate creation of additional affordable housing stock in the low and medium potential towns of the state.
·        All the projects are be required to be completed within seven years from the date of license granted.
Punjab CM Parkash Badal distributes health insurance cards & approves Rs 750 crore for road sector:
·        Government of Punjab to begin the process of issuing 303074 pre-active cashless Farmers Health Insurance Cards under Bhagat Puran Singh Sehat BimaYojna in the maiden phase of project.
·        This Scheme enable farmers and their families to get health cover up to Rs 50,000 for their treatment and compensation of Rs 5 Lakhs in case of death of the head of the family or any circumstances which may cause 100% disability to that person.
INTERNATIONAL:
India ranked 133rd in 2016 World Press Freedom Index:
·        India ranks 133rd out of 180 countries listed in the World Press Freedom Index 2016, released by NGO Reporters Without Borders.
·        India jumped three places compared with last year’s ranking. Published annually, the rankings are based on freedom allowed to journalists in countries around the world.
·        The index has been topped by Finland followed by the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark and New Zealand at second, third, fourth and fifth position respectively. Pakistan was ranked 147th and China 176th.
·        At the bottom of the index lies Eritrea at 180th rank. It is preceded by North Korea, Turkmenistan, Syria and China at 179th, 178th, 177th and 176th position respectively.
Argentina sells bonds for first time in 15 Years:
·        Argentina returned to international markets after 15 years with a $16.5 billion dollar bond sale, after it defaulted on $100 billion worth US dollar debt in 2001.
·        The sale comes following the election of President Mauricio Macri in November who has enacted a number of measures aimed at improving the country's finances and attracting international investment.
Europe becomes world’s first region to end malaria: WHO
·        Europe has become the world’s first region to wipe out malaria with zero cases reported last year.
·        The agency said in the report that only 179 cases of malaria were reported in six countries in 2010.
·        The region was last declared malaria free in 1975. Until the end of World War II, it was common in southern Europe, including Portugal, Italy, the Balkans and Greece.
·        There were 438,000 malaria deaths in 2015 around the world. Most of the victims were children under five with the vast majority in Africa.
Satellite to monitor China-Pakistan Economic Corridor projects to launch in 2018:
·        A satellite to monitor execution of development projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is set to launch in June 2018.
·        The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and the China Great Wall Industry Cooperation (CGWIC) signed an agreement for the development and launch of the “Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite (PRSS-1) System”, Dawn online reported.
China says population has reached 1.373 billion:
·        China’s mainland population reached 1.373 billion at the beginning of November, up 33.77 million since the last census was held in 2010, the statistics bureau said in estimates published.
·        China’s population is set to peak at about 1.45 billion by 2050 when one in every three is expected to be more than 60, with a shrinking proportion of working adults to support them.
United States President Barack Obama meets Saudi King with Iran on agenda:
·        United States President Barack Obama arrived in Riyadh to meet Saudi Arabia’s King Salman ahead of a summit with other Gulf Arab leaders and with regional tensions with Iran likely to be high on the agenda.

China eyes deeper military ties with Afghanistan to put an end to Taliban insurgency:
·        China wants to have deeper military ties with Afghanistan, including counter-terrorism intelligence cooperation and joint drills, a senior Chinese officer told a visiting Afghan envoy.
·        China is working with Pakistan and the United States to broker peace talks to end a Taliban insurgency that has raged for 15 years in Afghanistan, but last month the militants refused to take part.

UN, IMF, World Bank and OECD formed Platform for Collaboration on Tax:
·        Four international organization joined hands to form the Platform for collaboration in Tax Matters.
·        The Platform has been created as their step to boost global cooperation in tax matters.
·        The announcement regarding this was made just within two weeks after the release of the "Panama Papers" that stirred outrage at the widespread use of tax haven countries and shell companies by wealthy global elites and corporations to hide assets and avoid paying taxes.

Laos appoints new President, Prime Minister:
·        Communist Party chief Bounnhang Vorachit was appointed as the country’s new president and foreign minister Thongloun Sisoulith as the prime minister of Laos by Laos’s National Assembly.

Coal India launches Coal Mine tours:
·        In an attempt to show the minimal environmental impact of coal mining operations, Western Coalfields, a unit of Coal India, has created a 15-acre eco-park between the Saoner and Gondegaon mines in Maharashtra.
·        Tourists can now visit the insides of the Saoner coal mine and see the operations at the Gondegaon opencast mine from a distance.
Railways revenue growth in 2015-16 at 5-year low:
·        Indian Railways' revenue growth has hit a five-year low of 4.6% for the 2015-16 fiscal, compared to around 9-19% growth in the previous four fiscals.
·        Further, the freight volume traffic grew by 0.9% against 4-5% growth since 2010-11. Successive tariff hikes by Railways, slowdown in economic activity and improvement in road infrastructure led to the slowdown, analysts said.

India set to sign climate change treaty:
·        India will sign the Paris Agreement on climate change in New York.
·        The agreement was adopted by around 190 countries during the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) held in the French capital in December 2015.
·        According to a statement released after the Cabinet meeting, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar will sign the agreement on behalf of India at a high-level signature ceremony convened by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon.
SpiceJet to swap wet-lease fleet by June:
·        SpiceJet will replace all its seven wet-lease aircraft with dry-lease planes by June 15 this year, to cut costs and speed up operations, its Chairman Ajay Singh told.

Railways shows record high capital expenditure of Rs 94,000 crore in ’15-’16:
·        Under pressure to step up capital expenditure to boost the economy, railways have finished the financial year 2015-16 with a record high capex of Rs 94,000 crore, an increase of Rs 37,000 crore over the previous year.
·        Railways have set a target of Rs 1.5 lakh crore capital expenditure for the current fiscal.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
US Air Force sets new maglev speed record:
·        The US Air Force has set a new world speed record for a vehicle aided by magnetic levitation (maglev).
·        The 846th Test Squadron broke the milestone twice – first clocking around 826 kmph and then topping 1018 kmph a few days later.
·        The vehicle was powered along a 2,100-foot long track, with an acceleration close to 928 feet per second.
ISRO to launch satellite by Bengaluru students:
·        A nanosatellite developed by 250 students of PES University in Bengaluru will soon be launched by Indian Space Research Organization.
·        The satellite named PISAT, will take high resolution pictures of Earth from space. It will revolve around Earth at a distance of 680-720 km.
·        PES students and professors will control it from a commanding station established in the university campus.
Accenture opens Cyber Centre in Bengaluru:
·        To expand its security presence, Global consulting and technology services firm Accenture has set up a cyber center in Bengaluru.
·        The new facility brings together inter-disciplinary capabilities, ranging from innovation, incubation and development of new solutions to strategic consulting and transformation and the managed delivery of a broad range of cyber defense services.
·        The center is the largest cyber security facility in the Accenture global delivery network, which includes more than 50 facilities, the firm said adding its security presence in India has grown in nearly five years and today it is one of the company's largest geographies globally.
Russia Test-Fires ‘Iskander’ Tactical Ballistic Missile:
·        Russian Military test-fired a cruise missile named Iskander tactical missile system from the Kapustin Yar practice range in the Astrakhan Region as part of drill.
·        A missile brigade has live-fired a cruise missile from the Iskander tactical missile against a simulated enemy’s command post at a distance of around 200 km.
Intel starts 'Unnati Kendras' in 10 Telengana towns:
·        Chip maker Intel India said it has launched its 'Unnati Kendras', an initiative aimed at providing digital literacy and delivering government-related content to people, across 10 towns in Telangana.
·        Intel would collaborate with Common Service Centres (CSCs), facilities launched primarily for the delivery of e-services of the government in rural areas, for the initiative, it added.
Google unveils new version of Chromecast for Rs 3,399:
·        Technology giant Google launched the new version of its Internet streaming device Chromecast in India for Rs 3,399.
·        The company has also introduced Chromecast Audio in India at the same price, which was launched in the US last year.

Low -cost solar cells developed:
·        In a breakthrough, scientists have set a new world record for fullerene-free polymer solar cells that are cheaper and more efficient.
·        Polymer solar cells have in recent years emerged as a low-cost alternative to silicon solar cells.
·        In order to obtain high efficiency, fullerenes are usually required in polymer solar cells to separate charge carriers. However, fullerenes are unstable under illumination, and form large crystals at high temperatures.
SPORTS:
Hong Kong’s Irfan Ahmed suspended for two and a half years for breaching ICC Anti-Corruption Code:
·        International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that it has suspended Hong Kong all-rounder Irfan Ahmed from Cricket for two-and-a-half years.
·        He was suspended after he admitted to breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code (the ‘Code’).
·        Ahmed was charged with offences under the Code and provisionally suspended by the ICC.
·        His period of ineligibility will take effect from the date of his provisional suspension and will therefore expire on 4 May 2018.
Aaqib Javed steps down as UAE head coach:
·        Aaqib Javed has resigned from his role as the United Arab Emirates Cricket Head Coach effective May 31st 2016.
·        Aaqib joined UAE Cricket as Head Coach in March 2012 and has experienced the successes of guiding the UAE to qualify for the 2014 U19 World Cup, the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 and the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, overseeing the UAE gain T20I and ODI status, as well as the recent qualification to compete in the 2016 ACC Asia Cup.
OBITUARY:
Comedian Victoria Wood dies aged 62:
·        Comedian, singer and writer Victoria Wood has died after “a short but brave” battle with cancer aged 62.
·        The comedian found fame in the 1980s and was best known for her BBC sketch Acorn Antiques and comedy Dinnerladies. She won five Baftas including two for her one-off ITV drama Housewife 49.
Police horse 'Shaktiman' dead:
·        In Uttarakhand, the police horse Shaktiman, which suffered multiple fractures on its hind leg after sustaining serious injuries during the BJP-led protest, has died.
·        IG Garhwal Sanjay Gunjyal said, the horse passed away at 5.30 PM yesterday. He was suffering from medical-related complications

1. Europe becomes world’s first region to end malaria: WHO
1. Europe has become the world’s first region to wipe out Malaria, a mosquito-borne vetor disease with zero cases reported in the year 2015. It was revealed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in its World Malaria Report 2015. Particular region or country is declared Malaria free by WHO after it has zero locally acquired malaria cases for at least three consecutive years.
2. The number of malaria cases fell to zero from 90,712 between 1995 and 2015 in the countries of European region. Only 179 cases of malaria were reported in six countries in 2010. The last cases of malaria were reported in Tajikistan in 2014.

2. Union Cabinet approves signing the Paris Agreement adopted at 21st CoP
1. The Union Cabinet gave its approval for signing the Paris Agreement adopted at the 21st Conference of Parties of UNFCCC held in Paris in December 2015. In this regard, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar will sign the agreement on behalf of India. 
2. The Paris Agreement on climate change is considered as a milestone in global climate cooperation. It is meant to enhance the implementation of the Convention and recognizes the principles of common but differentiated responsibilities, equity and respective capabilities in the light of different national circumstances.

3. 2016 Pulitzer Prize Winners
1. The Sympathizer, a debut novel of Vietnamese American professor Viet Thanh Nguyen has won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. While, Associated Press has won two prestigious Pulitzer prize in Public Service for coverage for an investigation of severe labour abuses tied to the supply of seafood to American supermarkets and restaurants.

4. Union Government merged Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyaan with Khelo India
1. The Union Government in the third week of April 2016 has merged Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA), launched by the UPA government, with the Khelo India programme for development of sports.
2. Two other sport projects, Urban Sports Infrastructure Scheme (USIS) and National Sports Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS), launched by the Congress-led UPA regime have also been absorbed under Khelo India.
3. Khelo India is based on Gujarat's model of Khel Mahakumbh, in which schools and colleges from different parts of the country participate in about 27 disciplines. Similarly, the Sports Authority of Gujarat (SAG) organises summer camps under this project every year.

5. ISRO Scientists made world’s lightest material ‘Silica Aerogel’ to keep soldiers warm in Siachen
1. Scientists at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram indigenously manufactured the world's lightest synthetic material called ‘silica aerogel’ or ‘blue air’ or ‘frozen smoke’. It was in news in the third week of April 2016.
Silica Aerogel is the lightest synthetic material ever made by man.

6. BCCI appoints Rahul Johri as its first CEO
1. Rahul Johri has been appointed as the first Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Mr. Johri will report to the BCCI secretary and shall be given freedom to work independently in BCCI’s set-up that was traditionally controlled by honorary office-bearers. In his new role he will be responsible for the smooth functioning of operations, stakeholder management of BCCI and building robust strategies for further promoting the sport of cricket. 
2. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Johri had served as Discovery Networks Asia Pacific’s executive vice-president and general manager for South Asia. He has two decades of rich experience in the media industry.


UN, IMF, World Bank and OECD formed Platform for Collaboration on Tax
1. Four international organization joined hands to form the Platform for collaboration in Tax Matters on 19 April 2016. The Platform has been created as their step to boost global cooperation in tax matters.





2. The announcement regarding this was made just within two weeks after the release of the "Panama Papers" that stirred outrage at the widespread use of tax haven countries and shell companies by wealthy global elites and corporations to hide assets and avoid paying taxes.
