NATIONAL:
World Water Day observed today:

·         World Water Day, an annual event which focuses attention on the importance of water, is observed on March 22.
·         The first World Water Day was celebrated in 1993 after the United Nations approved of the same. This year's World Water Day theme is 'Better water, better jobs'.
·         Further, PETA has urged people to turn vegetarian in order to save water.
India to host 8th BRICS Summit in Goa in October:
·         India will host the eighth annual BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) Summit from October 15-16 in Goa, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj announced today.
·         India assumed the chairmanship of the conference from Russia on February 15 which will last till December 31. Building responsive, inclusive and collective solutions will be India's core theme during the summit, said Swaraj.
Government sets up panel to review jewellers' demands:
·         The government has constituted a panel under former Chief Economic Advisor Ashok Lahri to look into the demands of jewellers protesting against the proposed 1% levy on non-silver jewellery
·         The panel will review issues related to compliance procedures for excise duty and submit its report in 60 days. This comes after major jeweller associations called off their strike on Saturday.
Government clears new Defence Procurem1ent Procedure:
·         The government cleared the new Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) that focuses on fast-tracking acquisitions and Indian-made products.
·         Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said, "[T]he new DPP will be loaded on to our website on 28 March. It will be effective from 2 April." After the announcement, stocks of Defence-related companies gained up to 10% in early trade on Tuesday.
Nadda launches CBNAAT Machines for Quick diagnosis of TB:
·         Union Health Minister JP Nadda launched Cartridge Based Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (CBNAAT) machines for the quick diagnosis of Tuberculosis within two hours.
·         The CBNAAT is a revolutionary rapid molecular test which detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis and rifampicin drug resistance, simultaneously. This test is fully automated and provides results within two hours.
·         At present 121 CBNAAT machine are functioning and five hundred more such machines were launched by the Minister.
·         Nadda also launched a new anti-TB drug Bedaquiline, which is a new anti-TB drug for treatment of Multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis.
·         This drug is indicated for use in the treatment of drug-resistant TB. The drug will be made available in six public hospitals in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Guwahati and Ahmedabad.
GOI notified new Plastic Waste Management Rules:
·         The government of India has notified new norms for plastic waste managementacross the country. 
·         The Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, which is aimed at curbing the over 6,000 tonnes of uncollected plastic waste generated daily, will target plastic manufacturers and industries that use it.
·         Environment minister Prakash Javadekar said this will be brought about by a new principle of Extended Producers Responsibility Act.
·         The government also aims to standardise the 50 micron size plastic bags as opposed to the 40 micron ones, which was the minimum permissible limit earlier
I&B Minister gives away 5th National Photography Awards:
·         I&B Minister Arunjaitley gives away 5th National Photography Awards. Addressing the event Union Minister Jaitley said our impression of personalities and historical events are based on visuals and a good photograph has an indefinite life.
·         Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting, Col. RajyavardhanRathore and Secretary I&B, Shri Sunil Arora were also present on the occasion.
·         The Minister lauded the professional work of Shri Bhawan Singh who was given the Life Time Achievement Award for this year, recalling his excellence in capturing the visual journey of India from late 70s.
·         Shri ArunJaitley and Col. RajyavardhanRathore also felicitated the winners of the 5th National Photography Awards.
·         The Life Time Achievement award was presented to Shri Bhawan Singh for his illustrious career and contributions to the field of Photography.
·         Shri Bhawan Singh has worked in the Indian news industry for over five decades and is one of the senior photo journalist in the country.
·         His career which started in a newspaper has been built mostly around magazines. He worked as Magazine Photo Editor with India Today magazine. He is a recipient of the World Press Photo Award.
·         The total number of awards in the various categories were thirteen.
·         The various categories included Professional Photographer of the Year, Special Mention Award (Professional), Amateur Photographer of the Year, Special Mention Award (Amateur).
·         The Professional Photographer Award of the year was given to Shri Javed Ahmed Dar who trains his lens on pictures of human interest. His photographs have appeared in prestigious international publications.
·         Shri Himanshu Thakur was given the Amateur Photographer of the year award. He is a photo enthusiast who captures people’s emotions, expressions and city scapes.
·         Shri Jaitley also released the brochure for the 5th National Photography Awardswhich profiles the awardees and their work.
·          The Jury for the 5th National Photography Awards was a six member committee headed by Shri Ashok Dilwale. The other members of the Jury included Shri K. Madhavan Pillai, Shri SudharakOlwe, Shri H.Satish, Shri GurinderOsan and Shri SanjivMisra.
Government launches mobile app ‘PusaKrishi’:
·         Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh launched a new mobile app ‘PusaKrishi’ for farmers in order to take the technology to farm fields.
·         The mobile app was launched at the valedictory session of the three-day ‘KrishiUnnatiMela’.
·         With use of this mobile app, farmers can get easy solutions to their problems.
·         Farmers can get information about weather and accordingly they can take measures to save crops.
·         The app will provide farmers with information related to new varieties of crops developed by Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR), resource conserving cultivation practices as well as farm machinery and its implementation will help in increasing returns to farmers
Punjab law imposes life sentence for sacrilege:
·         The Punjab Assembly passed a law that imposes life imprisonment for the sacrilege of the Sikh religious book Guru Granth Sahib.
·         Under the new amendments to the Indian Penal Code (IPC), punishment for defiling places of worship was increased from two to 10 years. However, an amendment seeking to extend the punishment to cover other religions was rejected
OROP payout made to 13 lakh pensioners: Parrikar
·         As many as 13 lakh ex-servicemen have been paid the One Rank One Pension (OROP) arrears amounting to 2,300 crore by the government, said Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.
·         The remaining pensioners will get their arrears by mid-April, he added. The amount was released through Defence Pension Disbursing Offices (DPDOs), the State Bank of India and the Punjab National Bank
Number of Jan DhanYojana accounts up by 55.5%:
·         According to SocialCops' analysis of Pradhan Mantri Jan DhanYojana data, the number of bank accounts opened under the scheme increased by 55.5% from 2015 to 2016.
·         There are 21.31 crore accounts as of March 16, 2016 compared to 13.68 crore accounts as of February 28, 2015. Notably, over a quarter of the total accounts have a balance of 0.
9 gas power plants with 6k MW capacity revived:
·         The government announced the revival of nine stranded gas-based power plants (SGPs) with an installed capacity of 5,942 MW.
·         The plants will supply power at or below 4.70 per unit to the distribution companies between April and September, the Power Ministry said. This is the third such SGP auction as the first two were held last year.
PM laid Foundation Stone for Ambedkar Memorial in New Delhi:
·         Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of a state of the art memorial to B R Ambedkar in New Delhi.
·         The three-storeyed memorial spread over 1.85 acres on Alipur Road in north Delhi will be in the shape of an open Constitution with a dome in the middle.
·         Mr. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, had breathed his last at 26, Alipur Road, and the place is considered sacred by his followers.
·         The Union government is celebrating 125th birth anniversary year of B R Ambedkar since the year 2015.
Parsi- zoroastrian new year ‘Navroz’ being celebrated on March 21:
·         Navroz is being celebrated. Navroz marks the beginning of the New Year of the Persian calendar.
·         The festival illustrates the principle of change inherent in all material existence.
·         It also conveys the message that human life is closely interwoven with the cycle of happiness, joy, success and failure.
·         Prime Minister Narendra Modi has greeted the nation on the occasion of Parsi- zoroastrian new year ‘Navroz’.
India distributes scholarships to over 800 Bangladeshi students under Muktijodha Scholarship Scheme:
·         India distributed scholarships to over 800 Bangladeshi students under the Muktijodha Scholarship Scheme.
·         The scholarships were distributed in Dhaka at the hands of Minister for Liberation War Affairs in the presence of Indian High Commissioner Harsh VardhanSringla.
·         The Scholarship scheme was initiated by the Indian government in 2006 to strengthen the historic legacy that both countries share in fighting and winning the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistan.
NTPC starts 250 MW Unit in Bihar:
·         NTPC Ltd said that it has commissioned Unit I of 250 MW capacity of the Nabinagar Thermal Power Station in Bihar. The power plant is owned by a subsidiary of NTPC called the Bhartiya Rail Bijlee Company Ltd.
·         NTPC now has a total installed capacity of 45,798 MW. During the fiscal 2015-16, NTPC’s generation capacity has increased by 1,200 MW.
Unions in UK appeal to Tata Steel ahead of March 29 meeting:
·         Tata Steel workers in the UK has appealed to Tata Steel ahead of its board meeting next week, which could determine the future of the company’s steel works at Port Talbot in Wales.
·         The union Community called on the British government to join it in pushing for the Tata board to support a turnaround plan for the steel works.
·         The union met with Hans Fischer, the newly appointed head of Tata Steel’s European operations following the resignation of Karl Koehler last month
India's forest cover increased from 2013 to 2015:
·         India's forest cover increased by 3,775 square km from 2013 to 2015, according to SocialCops' analysis of data from the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change.
·         Mizoram had the minimum loss of forest cover (306 square km) during the period, while Tamil Nadu had the maximum increase (2,501 square km). Overall, 21% of India's land is covered by forests.
NDMC plans to make Connaught Place car-free:
·         The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is planning to ban vehicles from the inner circle of Connaught Place (CP) in Delhi, making it accessible only to pedestrians starting from April 1.
·         The centre is reportedly keen to showcase green CP for 'Swachh Bharat' and 'Smart City' initiatives. However, shopkeepers fear that their "business will suffer hugely if cars are prohibited".
Maharashtra Cuts Capital Investment in Farm Sector:
·         The Maharashtra government’s financial statement suggested that the total capital expenditure on agriculture and allied activities will fall by 10.7% to 4645.59 crore in 2016-17.
·         About 52% of Maharashtra’s population is dependent on agriculture and allied activities. Hampered by crop failure due to persistent drought conditions, the sector has witnessed negative growth over the past two years.
Agasthyamala in UNESCO's Biosphere Reserve list:
·         India's Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve has been added to UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserve among 20 new sites.
·         Located in the Western Ghats, the site was established in 2001. It includes peaks reaching 1,868 metre above sea level and is home to 2,254 species of higher plants. Of the 18 biosphere reserves in India, nine are included in UNESCO's network.

INTERNATIONAL:
Obama, Castro hail new day for US-Cuba relations:
·         US President Barack Obama and his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro vowed in Havana.
·         At a historic joint conference, Cuban President Raul Castro and President Barack Obama agreed to work together, despite wrangling over human rights.
US President Obama Wraps up Historical Visit:
·         The three days historical visit of President Barack Obama concludes today with a hopeful vision for future relations.
·         Cuba President Raul Castro and US President Barack Obama sparred over human rights issues including the American prison at Guantanamo Bay and Cuba's political prisoners.
·         Mr Obama, the first serving US president to visit Cuba since 1959, said the trade embargo would be fully lifted.
Carbon emissions highest in 66 million years:
·         A study in the journal Nature Geoscience says, the rate of carbon emissions is higher than at any time in fossil records stretching back 66 million years to the age of the dinosaurs.
·         Current carbon emissions, mainly from burning fossil fuels, are about 10 billion tonnes a year, against 1.1 billion a year spread over 4,000 years at the onset of the fast warming 56 million years ago.
·         UN studies project that temperatures could rise by up to 4.8 degrees Celsius this century, causing floods, droughts and more powerful storms, if emissions rise unchecked.
Nearly 1.8 billion people will face water scarcity by 2025:
·         By 2025, some 1.8 billion people will face absolute water scarcity and an estimated two-thirds of the world’s population could be living under water-stressed conditions, showed UN statistics.
·         Three-fourths of the fresh water that people use every day comes from forested catchment areas and more than 1.6 billion people live on the forests for food, water, medicines and fuel, forest experts said at the panel discussion marking the International Day of Forests which falls.
Nepal seals agreement on transit rights through China:
·         Underlining the growing role of China in South Asia, Nepal secured transit rights through China following an agreement in Beijing between Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang.
·         Earlier, China extended a ceremonial welcome to Mr. Oli who held official talks with the Chinese leadership. News reports said Mr. Oli would also conclude agreements on building of multiple train routes connecting Nepal with China’s key production centres.
Aung Suu Kyi nominated for Myanmar Cabinet post:
·         Myanmar's National League for Democracy party (NLD) leader Aung Suu Kyi was nominated by President HtinKyaw to the country's cabinet.
·         Suu Kyi is one of the 18 ministers recommended by Kyaw to the Parliament for approval. Earlier, Suu Kyi had said she will be "above the President" after she was barred from being appointed to the post.
South Korea registers first case of Zika virus:
·         South Korea registered its first case of the mosquito-borne Zika virus that has been linked to birth defects.
·         South Korea's Centers for Disease Control & Prevention reported that a 43-year-old man who had returned from Brazil was diagnosed with the virus.
·         Earlier, the World Health Organisation declared the spread of the Zika virus a global emergency.
China to Build Rail link to Nepal via Tibet:
·         China agreed to build the first ever rail link to Nepal. The nations also signed a transit trade deal.
·         The deal, and nine other agreements aimed at reducing landlocked Nepal's total dependence on India, were signed during Nepal PM KP Oli's China visit.
·         This came after a nearly six-month long "unofficial blockade" due to Madhesi protests crippled Nepal.

·         The electoral authority of Tanzania’s semi-autonomous archipelago of Zanzibar, the ZEC, announced incumbent President Ali Mohamed Shein had won his re-election bid, after polls boycotted by the main opposition party.
Indian Wells CEO resigns after 'sexist' comments:
           ·         Indian Wells tennis tournament CEO Raymond Moore resigned, following his                                comments that women's tennis has been carried by men's tennis.
           ·         Moore had earlier publicly apologised for his comments after receiving widespread                              criticism. Notably, former Oracle CEO and Indian Wells owner, Larry Ellison commended                  women players for their efforts to obtain equal treatment of women in tennis

BANKING:
SEBI considering doing away with requirement of fresh KYC for Opening of new accounts in Securities Market:
·         Indian capital market regulator SEBI is considering doing away with the requirement of a fresh KYC for opening of new accounts in securities market if the investor has got a bank account.
·         Under the proposed move, the market intermediaries like mutual funds would rather be allowed to use the Know Your Customer or KYC checks conducted by banks themselves.
·         According to SEBI Chairman U K Sinha, the common Know your Customer or KYC for the entire financial sector is also in works, but the regulator in the meantime is considering allowing banks’ KYC for the securities markets
4-day-long bank holiday begins on March 24:
·         Even as bankers will enjoy a four-day long weekend in many States beginning March 24, they are hoping that alternative channels such as ATMs, Point-of-Sale terminals, internet and mobile banking, and business correspondents will serve their customers well.
·         While banks will be closed for Holi (March 24) in some States, they are shut across the country for Good Friday (March 25). March 26, being a fourth Saturday, will be a holiday.
Rajan calls for new global monetary policy pact:
·         RBI Governor RaghuramRajan called for a new international agreement on the lines of the Bretton Woods system to prevent central banks from adopting policies that could hurt other economies.

Apple unveils smaller iPhone SE, starting at $399:
·         Apple Inc unveiled a smaller, cheaper iPhone aimed at new buyers, especially in emerging markets and possibly China, the world’s biggest buyer of smartphones, as the technology company looks to reverse a decline in worldwide sales of its most important product.
·         The new device, called the iPhone SE, has a 4-inch (10-cm) screen and starts at a price of $399. It represents Apple’s second bid for the crowded mid-tier market after an unsuccessful foray three years ago.
Paytm forays into online movie ticketing segment, ties-up with PVR:
·         PVR Ltd, India’s biggest multiplex chain and mobile payments and e-commerce platform Paytm announced a strategic partnership to sell PVR’s movie tickets on Paytm’s e-commerce platform.
·         This marks Alibaba-backed Paytm’s foray into the online movie ticketing segment and now the firm will compete with online tickets booking company Bigtree Entertainment Pvt. Ltd that operates as Bookmyshow.com.
India's current account deficit drops to $7.1 bn:
·         India's current account deficit (CAD) narrowed to $7.1 billion or 1.3% of GDP in the quarter ended December 2015, from $7.7 billion or 1.5% of the GDP in the year-ago period, the RBI said.
·         The reduction in CAD was attributed to a lower trade deficit ($34 billion) on account of a fall in commodity prices
Foodpanda Co-founder's startup acquires Ruplee:
·         Co-founder and former Managing Director of Foodpanda, RohitChadda-led offline payment platform Paylo has acquired restaurants payment app Ruplee for an undisclosed amount.
·         Teams and products of both the startups will merge to let app-only Ruplee become an omni-channel payment platform. Founded in 2014 by Natasha Jain, Ruplee lets users pay at select restaurants through its app.
FIPB clears 15 FDI proposals worth Rs.7,262 crore:
·         The government cleared 15 Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) proposals totalling to Rs.7,261.6 crore, based on recommendations from government body Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).
·         Japanese insurer Nippon Life Insurance, Tata AIA, Aviva Life and Birla Sun Life were among the companies that got an approval. The FIPB can approve FDI proposals of up to Rs.5,000 crore.
Ola to skill 1 lakh youth in Maharashtra:
·         Taxi aggregator Ola has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Maharashtra government to create 1 lakh entrepreneurship opportunities for the youth in the state over the next five years.
·         Ola will provide skill training to both men and women to be independent driver-entrepreneurs.
·         The company also plans to expand its network of driver-owned cabs across Micro, Mini and Prime categories.
Shuttle Service Commut acquires H2O Cabs:
·         Hyderabad-based employee shuttle service startupCommut has acquired app-based cab service H2O Cabs for an undisclosed amount.
·         Post acquisition, TejasriDarsi, H2O Founder, will be handling sales and partnerships of Commut. Founded in August 2014, H2O Cabs lets users book a seat in air-conditioned and Wi-Fi enabled cabs on fixed routes in Hyderabad
Government cancels recognition of Delhi Stock Exchange:
·         The government has formally withdrawn the recognition of Delhi Stock Exchange (DSE) after it was derecognised by markets regulator Sebi in November 2014 for "serious irregularities" in its functioning.
·         The DSE board had overlooked the "due transfer of shares in demat accounts and receipt of funds by the appointed date", the Sebi order had said. DSE was incorporated in 1947.
Sachin Tendulkar invests in IoT firm Smartron:
            ·         Sachin Tendulkar has invested in Bengaluru-based Internet of Things (IoT) firm Smartron                   India and has become its brand ambassador.
            ·         Founded in 2013 by Mahesh Lingareddy, it is focused in the areas of smart sensors,                              robotics, artificial intelligence, big data and crowd technologies for IoT-enabled products.
            ·         Smartron is set to launch a slew of smart devices and IoT products this year.

AWARDS AND HONOURS:
M Sukumaran chosen for CV Kunhiraman Literary Prize:     
·         Renowned Malayalam writer M Sukumaran in the third week of March 2016 was chosen for theCV Kunhiraman Literary Prize
·         The prize consists of 10001 rupees in cash, a citation, and a statuette designed by artist BD Dathan.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
Zuckerberg meets China’s propaganda chief:
·         Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg held a rare meeting with China’s propaganda chief Liu Yunshan, at a time when Chinese authorities are tightening control over their cyberspace.
·         Mr. Zuckerberg was in Beijing to attend an Economic forum.
Medicine for drug-resistant TB launched:
·         On the eve of World Tuberculosis Day, Health Minister J.P. Nadda launched Bedaquiline new drug for Drug Resistant TB as part of the national programme. The drug will be introduced in 104 districts across five States.
·         Bedaquilineis being introduced at six tertiary care centres across India.
Facebook to end support for BlackBerry:
·         Facebook will end support for BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 operating systems on March 31.
·         Earlier, WhatsApp also announced to end BlackBerry support by 2016 end.
India aims to capture 20% of IoT market: NASSCOM
·         According to NASSCOM, India aims to capture 20% market share in the Internet of Things (IoT) sector by 2020.
·         Further, the global IoT business is expected to touch $300 billion by 2020. NASSCOM's Vice President (Industrial Initiative) KS Vishwanathan said that IoT is driving the fourth wave of industrial revolution in sectors like manufacturing, energy, transportation and medicine.
Bike-taxi app Baxi to work without internet:
·         On demand bike-hailing service Baxi will let Android usersbook rides without using a data connection from the next week.
·         The app will send a text message with the user's location to request a bike from the server, which will revert the user via text message.
·         Baxi's bike-taxi service is currently operational in Gurgaon and Faridabad.
Ola acquires mobile payments StartupQarth:
·         Taxi-aggregator Company Ola acquired Chennai-based startupQarth, which runs mobile payments app X-Pay, to strengthen its mobile wallet business Ola Money.
·         The Co-founders of Qarth will join Ola Money along with their present team. Founded in 2012 by Abhinav Srivastava and Prerit Srivastava, the X-Pay app facilitates mobile payment to anyone with IMPS enabled bank account across India.
Apple launches CareKit to create health apps:
            ·         Apple on Monday launched CareKit, a new developer tool that will make it easier to build                   healthcare apps for iOS devices.
            ·         The platform can be used to monitor symptoms, track treatment progress and keep tabs on                    medication schedules.
            ·         The first app created with the open-source platform, to be available in April, will be                              tailored for people with the Parkinson’s disease

Hardeep Singh qualifies for Olympic in Greco -Roman wrestling:
·         Wrestler Hardeep Singh scripted history as he became first Indian grappler in twelve years to book an Olympic berth in Greco-Roman category.
·         Hardeep secured the ‘Rio’ berth even before he won the silver medal, by virtue of reaching the final in the 98 kg category in the Asian Olympic Qualification Championship at Astana, Kazakhstan.
·         This is the first time an Indian Greco-Roman grappler has ensured a place in the Olympics in a heavyweight category.
Hockey India announces 18-member Indian team for Sultan Azlan Shah Cup:
·         Hockey India announced an 18-member Indian team that will take part in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. 25th edition of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup will be held in Ipoh, Malaysia from April 6 to 16.
·         While Sardar Singh will lead the team, S Sunil will be supporting him as the vice-captain.
·         With the 2016 Rio Olympics few months down the line, the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup will serve has as a barometer to measure the team’s preparation.
BCB appeals ICC for revoking Taskin Ahmed’s ban:
·         ICC ban on fast spinner Taskin Ahmed for his bowling action, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has moved ICC hoping for positive response.
·         ICC banned Taskin Ahmed and Arafat Sunny for their bowling action even as the team is competing in the World T20 Cup held in India drawing a lot of flak from Bangladesh cricket lovers especially on the social media.
BAI announces cash reward of 5 lakh for Prannoy:
·         Badminton Association of India has announced a cash award of Rs 5 lakhs to H S Prannoy for clinching the men’s singles title at the Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold tournament.
·         Prannoy saw off seventh seed Marc Zwiebler of Germany 21-18 21-15 in the summit clash last night.
·         It was Prannoy’s second Grand Prix title after the Indonesia Masters Grand Prix Gold which he won in 2014

·         Australia registered their first victory of the World T20 as they defeated Bangladesh by three wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore, on Monday.
SSP Chawrasia clinches Hero Indian Open title:
·         SSP Chawrasia clinched the Hero Indian Open title with a two-stroke win and also secured his Full European Tour card at theDelhi Golf Course
·         Chawrasia, who finished runner-up on four occasions, had the last laugh when he beat defending champion compatriot AnirbanLahiri and South Korean Jeughun Wang by two strokes to clinch his third European Tour and fourth Asian Tour title.
