The Times of India: Ganga Calling
River will really benefit from IITs playing an
active role in cleaning it
It's a
good that the Centre has invited 10 IITs to actively participate in cleaning up
the Ganga by adopting
गोद लेना various
stretches फैलाव of the
river, effecting implementable action plans there, handholding हत्था some
villages in treating pollutants प्रदूषक along
the selected stretch, etc.
An effective rollout बेलना of the
Namami Gange programme to rejuvenate फिर से जवान बना देना the river requires
coordinating state of art technologies. IITs are best placed to do this as they
have been jointly working with other research institutes on a comprehensive विस्तृत Ganga
River Basin Management Plan since 2010.
And the
tasks are enormous बहुत बड़ा. Studies show that as many
as 144 drains नाला
discharge छोड़ना 6475
million litres of wastewater into the Ganga each day . A massive counterattack जवाबी हमला over the next five years
envisionकल्पना करना setting
up sewage
नाली से बहनेवाला पानी इत्यादि treatment plants, ghat development, solid waste management
schemes, bio diversity conservation efforts and more at a cost of Rs 20,000
crore. But it's not like crores haven't been spent on cleaning the river in the
past. If the latest round of investments has to yield a different result, it's
good to have the tech savvy जानकार and efficient IITs engaged in the project from A to Z.
But
technology is only one aspect of the initiative. A clean-up of the river also
demands a comprehensive plan to ensure सुनिश्चित करना continuous flow of
pollution free waters, which calls for close interaction between different
states and local bodies. Plans to roll out a four battalion Ganga Eco Task
Force and use a Territorial Army प्रादेशिक सेना unit to monitor operations
need to be properly implemented कार्यान्वित करना too. If
all of this is done well, it will not only benefit the 40 crore plus population
that is settled on the Ganga river basin but also give a fillip प्रेरणा to
productive activities, and enhance बढ़ाना the
overall quality of life on a quarter of India's landmass जमीन का कोई बड़ा टुकड़ा.
The Economic Times: Don't Pamper Airlines, Make Travel Cheap
The
government is reportedly
खबरों के अनुसार concerned चिंतित over
Gulf carriers garnering
संग्रह करना a large
chunk टुकड़ा of
outbound
अन्य देश को जाने वाला
passenger traffic from India. So, it wants to provide a level playing field to
domestic airlines. Policy corrections such as these are warped विकृत. The
primary focus must be to make air travel cheap and efficient for a traveller,
and not to pamper बहुत लाड़-प्यार करना domestic
airlines. Passengers, at any point of time, want to fly in and out of India at
a low cost to pursue लगे रहना their own business, and
not with the objective of protecting the bottomline आधार-रेखा of domestic carriers. A
liberal policy on bilateral द्विदेशीय rights अधिकार has been
an enabler योग्य बनाना.
Gulf
carriers जहाज कंपनी have reportedly received a
fillip प्रोत्साहन as they
fly a large number of outbound passengers from India by smartly utilising their
bilateral rights and providing increased connectivity to different parts of the
world from various Indian cities. The government reckons माना जाना that allowing requests by
foreign carriers for more seats and landing points could hurt the growth
prospects
संभावना of local players is misplaced. To correct the skew झुका हुआ, it is looking at
restricting the ports of call for overseas airlines in India. This is absurd हास्यास्पद. An
option such as limiting capacity , or even auctioning नीलामी करना bilateral rights, is not
the right policy choice. It goes against the grain मिज़ाज़ of the draft aviation policy.
Granting प्रदान करना liberal bilateral rights
to foreign airlines will raise competition and lower fares. However, it also
impacts airlines and airports. The hub for West-bound Indian travellers is now
in the UAE. This may have hurt domestic airports, but passengers have gained.
The solution is to grant equally liberal bilaterals to other countries,
including America and in Europe and East Asia as well. These airlines would
then compete to pick up passengers from India itself. Passengers will gain when
airlines face stiffer मजबूत
competition, and rightly so.
