The Economic Times: Inequality असमानता With a Brighter Side
A report by Oxfam shows that wealth is becoming increasingly
concentrated in the hands of a small group of billionaires: just 62 people, 53
of them men, own as much wealth as the poorest half of the entire world
population, and the richest 1% own more than the other 99% put together.
Rising
inequality is potentially संभवतः damaging
for society . Policies aimed at reducing inequalities, particularly of the
structural kind that transmit भेजना
inequality across generations, are called for.
However,
there are two redeeming मुक्ति दिलाना features to the process of
growth that has produced such inequality . Those amassing एकत्र करना wealth in the developed
world are also voluntarily इच्छापूर्वक spending
fortunes भाग्य से मीली हुई वस्तु on philanthropy सब लोगों से प्रीति in areas
once considered the domain अधिकार-क्षेत्र
exclusively
पूरी तरह से of governments, such as
healthcare and primary education. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced
investing $45 billion for a better world. Philanthropists परोपकारी such as
Bill Gates are among the largest spenders खर्च करने वाला in public health. Other high-net-worth individuals must emulate बराबरी करना them, even if
philanthrophy is often seen as a smart way to save on taxes.
Rapid तेज
globalisation वैश्वीकरण and
technological changes, which widens inequality in rich countries, also narrows
the income gap between developed countries such as the US and developing
countries such as India. Middle-class office jobs are being outsourced बाहरी स्रोत को ठेके पर देना to India, and blue-collar ones traded away to China. This adds to
the profits of the owners of capital. Entrepreneurship is ever more easy , with
capital and infrastructure available on tap in rich countries. The combined
effect is for entrepreneurs and high-end professionals to grow ever more
prosperous सुखी, even as
incomes of the rest of society stagnate स्थिर होना. But let us not ignore the
improvement in absolute living standards such growth induces.
The Times of India: Reshuffling अदला-बदली The Deck ताश के पत्ते
As Pakistan grapples धर दबोचना
with the Saudi-Iran faceoff सामना करना,
India's diplomatic नीति संबंधी
calculus
गणना must also shift
The savage वहशी
terrorist attack on Bacha Khan University in Pakistan's Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, a
year after the massacre सामूहिक हत्या at Peshawar's army public
school, once again underscores ज़ोर देना the magnitude महत्व of
Pakistan's internal terror problem, which co-exists with its strategy of using
terror as an external policy instrument.Tehreek-e-Taliban has claimed
responsibility for this barbaric क्रूर attack,
which came immediately after Pakistan's Sharifs, the prime minister and his
army chief, finished their sudden trip to Tehran and Riyadh.
Even as
it grapples मुठभेड़ with
questions over its India policy and internal terror, Pakistan is simultaneously एक साथ trying a mediating मध्यस्थता role in
the Saudi-Iran faceoff.
This
tussle कशमकश has
changed the region's strategic calculus and affects India directly . The US is
gradually
क्रमश:
withdrawing हटा लेना from the region, the
Chinese are increasingly making inroads दखलंदाजी, the
Iran nuclear deal has changed old equations and the Saudis have suddenly become
more aggressive.
Chinese
President Xi Jinping's visit to Tehran this week underscores ज़ोर देना how quickly the regional
winds are shifting.
Pakistan
is having to make some hard calls. Riyadh has long been its benefactor धन आदि से सहायता करने वाले but despite Saudi urging उकसाना ,
Pakistan avoided getting involved in military action in Yemen and is trying to
stay out of the Saudi coalition गठबंधन against
Iran. As Pakistan adjusts to its new geopolitical realities, so must India. New
Delhi has long paid lip-service to Arab regimes शासन-पद्धति and cloaked आच्छादित its
close dealings with Israel under a veil नक़ाब .But this
narrative is now changing, as evidenced गवाही in
external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj's recent Israel visit. The changing
balance of power in the Middle East is reshaping regional security for Pakistan
and so it must for us. India must recalibrate its strategic calculus in the
region in hard-nosed
सख्त pursuit कोशिश of its goals, which include keeping terror in check and energy
security .
