Mehbooba Mufti must end uncertainty and
give Jammu & Kashmir a government
The political pot in Srinagar is astir उत्तेजित. PDP
ended its first formal meeting since the death of chief minister Mufti Mohammad
Sayeed by announcing its “agenda of alliance मैत्रीपूर्ण संबंध “ with
BJP was “a sacred
पवित्र document“ but without taking a final call on the alliance itself.
That decision has been left entirely to party president Mehbooba Mufti. Her
reported pledge प्रतिज्ञा to
“follow“ her father's footsteps and PDP's praise for Prime Minister Narendra
Modi's Lahore initiative with Pakistan both indicate that the party is clearing
the decks ताश के पत्ते for
Mehbooba to be sworn in as Kashmir's first woman chief minister.
By
setting neither a timeline nor preconditions for continuing the alliance with
BJP , PDP has departed स्वर्गवासी from its
earlier position that it needed to “review the progress“ on the common alliance
agenda. PDP spokesperson समुदाय केलिये बोलने वाला Nayeem
Akhtar cites “implementation लागू करना of the
alliance agenda in good faith“ as the basis for going forward. Mehbooba should
now end the uncertainty and make her move. While Mufti was hailed शाबाशी देना as a
statesman for allying with BJP , the PDP-BJP relationship has been far from
smooth in practice. Among flashpoints चरम बिंदु have
been the release of jailed separatist Masarat Alam Bhat, differences over flood
relief from the Centre, the debate on the beef ban and revived पुनर्जीवित
controversy
तकरार over the state flag.For PDP , concerns about falling गिरनेवाला public
support in its bastions
समर्थक in the Kashmir Valley have framed this delay on the alliance
question.
Yet, in
the end, Mehbooba has few real choices. PDP has 28 and BJP 25 legislators in
Jammu and Kashmir's 87-member assembly . While it is theoretically possible for
PDP to join with Congress's 12 MLAs and other independents to cobble गांठना together
an alternative, such a government would be unstable. It would also keep most of
Jammu out of the power-sharing arrangement. National Conference's Omar Abdullah
has already clarified that his party is not changing its position on not
aligning with BJP , despite his father Farooq indicating earlier that the
party's doors may not be closed to such an option.
For now,
both PDP and BJP must resolve स्पष्ट करना to work
together. They must also find a way to soften the harsh edges on their
respective agendas that provoke भड़काना the
other side. Kashmir is once again at a crossroads on militancy militancy . The
PDP-BJP alliance is important to bring it back from the brink किनारा .

Low-Hanging Fruit is Fruit Itself
India, it turns out, is the world's second-largest producer of
fruit. China leads the pack, producing 154.4 million tonnes of horticultural बाग़वानी-संबंधी produce,
exceeding India's 82.6 million tonnes by 87%. India is also a place where a
major part of the produce is lost or damaged: precisely ठीक-ठीक how much
is anyone's guess. The point is that the country has great scope to increase
output and productivity in horticultural produce and add value besides, ranging
from basic washing, sorting and climate-controlled storage to food processing.
India

distributed agro-processing, thanks to the spread of electricity to rural India
and extensive road connectivity even in the hinterland परिक्षेत्र .
Granted स्वीकृत, power
lines drawn to a village does not mean that power is supplied to it.
But if
the problem of electricity boards not being able to collect realistic tariffs
for the power they supply can be fixed, as it has been in some states, power
availability will no longer be a constraint लाचारी on the
creation of modern food processing in rural areas. India has diverse विभिन्न
agro-climatic conditions, making it possible to grow an enormous बहुत अधिक variety
of fruit and vegetables in the country. Once such output is freed from the
clutches शिकंजे of
institutionalised middlemen in the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee and
farmers are linked to final consumers with a minimum number of intermediaries,
the combination of power to run cold storages and roads for swift तेज़
transportation via refrigerated trucks will see the production and productivity
of fruit and vegetables shoot up तेजी से बढ़ना.
Freeze-drying of fruit and vegetables, processing into pulp and puree
and ready-to-cook meals, conversion into juice, jam and other kinds of preserve नष्ट न होने देना -the scope to add value at low cost is huge.
